A few minutes before midnight on New Year's Eve, Las Vegas Boulevard has no cars on it. It's all sidewalk. Crowds stand in the street between the resorts, phones up, waiting for the rooftops to light. That's the scene the whole day builds to. The plain version: the Strip closes to traffic in the evening, fireworks launch at midnight, and the hours before are full of shows that play December 31 like any other night. Here's how to fill them, in order.
Midday: the Las Vegas Bowl at Allegiant Stadium
Start with college football. The Las Vegas Bowl kicks off at midday on December 31 under the roof at Allegiant Stadium, across Interstate 15 from Mandalay Bay, so the final whistle comes with the whole night still ahead. Two fan bases and their bands make the noise. Our Las Vegas Bowl guide covers how the teams are picked and what bowl week looks like.

Where: Allegiant Stadium, across I-15 from Mandalay Bay. When: midday kickoff, December 31. Best for: college football fans with a whole night planned after.
Late afternoon: O at Bellagio
O by Cirque du Soleil plays twice on New Year's Eve, and the late-afternoon performance is the smart one to book. The stage is a pool. Divers drop from the rafters, swimmers rise through the floor, and the water disappears between scenes. You walk out of the Bellagio into the evening crowd already gathering at the fountains.

Where: O Theatre, Bellagio, center Strip. When: late afternoon or early evening, 90 minutes. Best for: couples and anyone who wants the Strip's signature show before the party.
Early evening with kids: Blue Man Group at Luxor
Families need New Year's Eve plans that end before the crowds peak, and Blue Man Group has two performances that do. Three silent blue drummers, a lot of paint and a shower of paper at the end. It's 90 minutes, nobody says a word, and the early show leaves time for dinner and a look at the closed Strip before bedtime.

Where: Blue Man Theater, Luxor, south Strip. When: late afternoon or early evening, 90 minutes. Best for: families with kids three and up.
Dinner: Tournament of Kings at Excalibur
Tournament of Kings solves dinner and a show in one booking. Knights joust a few feet from the tables, the meal comes without forks, and each section of the arena cheers for its own king. The early seating suits families. The later one ends with time to walk out onto the boulevard before the countdown.

Where: King Arthur's Arena, Excalibur, south Strip. When: two evening seatings, 90 minutes with dinner. Best for: families and groups who want dinner sorted.

Late: Backstreet Boys at Sphere
The biggest ticket of the night starts latest. Backstreet Boys at Sphere added a New Year's Eve date to Into the Millennium, the residency that made them the first pop act to headline Sphere when it opened in July 2025. It's the only show on this list that starts late in the evening, so the songs from 1999 carry you right up toward midnight inside a 16K screen.

Where: Sphere, east of the Strip behind The Venetian. When: late evening, December 31. Best for: the fans who want New Year's Eve to sound like 1999.

Midnight on the boulevard
The fireworks are free, and nothing else in town matches them. For New Year's Eve 2025, they launched from ten resort rooftops at once, from MGM Grand at the south end to The STRAT at the north, with a drone show leading the countdown in the last 90 seconds. It lasts about eight minutes. Ten rooftops go off together, and a street full of strangers cheers the same second.
Practical: cold, crowds and getting back
December nights in Las Vegas average a low of 39.6°F (4.2°C), and you'll stand outside for hours, so a real coat beats a party outfit alone. It's colder than it looks. Some hotels check for a room key at the doors as midnight gets close. The Las Vegas Monorail runs inside the closure all night, and it beats waiting for a ride once the boulevard reopens. Our Las Vegas weather by month guide has the rest of the December numbers.
The best seat for midnight
The moment worth the trip is the first burst over the rooftops, with the crowd on the street going silent for half a second before it roars. Location matters. Where you stand decides how much of it you see, and a room inside the closure means you can walk back in. Our guide to the hotels inside the New Year's Eve Strip closure lists them, and the New Year's Eve in Las Vegas page shows everything else bookable that night.
