El Cortez Hotel & Casino - Adults Only
El Cortez Hotel & Casino holds a distinction no other property on Fremont Street can claim: it has been operating continuously since 1941, making it the longest-running casino hotel in Las Vegas. That history is not decorative. The building's 1952 facade is still intact, and in February 2013 the structure was officially placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Past owners included Bugsy Siegel, Meyer Lansky, Moe Sedway and Gus Greenbaum - names that lend the place a mob-era weight that newer Downtown hotels simply can't manufacture. Inside Club Cortez, a mobile exhibit provided by the Museum of Gaming History honors longtime owner Jackie Gaughan, featuring gaming memorabilia and a 30-minute video montage of the man who shaped this corner of Downtown for decades.
The 364-room property offers more variety than its vintage reputation suggests. The Original 47 rooms are the genuine article - compact queen-bed quarters from the 1940s, accessible only by staircase, and available at some of the lowest nightly rates in the city. Guests wanting more space can cross the street to the South Beach-themed El Cortez Cabana Suites, which also house the property's fitness equipment. For something entirely different, ten themed Designer Suites came out of the hotel's 2011 Design-A-Suite Downtown contest, each reflecting a distinct aesthetic - the Rec Room being a particular standout.
The 45,000-square-foot casino runs a full roster of games: blackjack, craps, roulette, pai gow, Caribbean Stud Poker, Let It Ride, mini-baccarat, keno, poker and more than 1,000 slot machines including Megabucks. The roulette tables accept minimum bets as low as a dollar, with 25-cent chips available - a rarity in any Las Vegas casino. A race and sports book affiliated with Station Casinos handles sports betting. Guests who want to eat without leaving a hot machine can call on the Gambling Gourmet, a game-side dining service that delivers food directly to the casino floor.
El Cortez sits on Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas, one block from the Fremont Street Experience. That short walk puts the pedestrian canopy, live performances and the concentration of classic Downtown casinos well within reach without requiring a car or rideshare. The surrounding Fremont East Entertainment District has added a growing cluster of independent bars, restaurants and shops in the blocks immediately around the hotel - all accessible on foot. Two five-story parking garages serve guests who drive in. An airport shuttle runs Sunday through Friday during morning hours, making car-free arrivals straightforward for most of the week.
Dining at El Cortez runs toward the honest and unpretentious. Siegel's 1941 is the sit-down anchor, named for the year the property opened. Subway and Pizza Lotto round out the on-site options for guests who want something quick. Three bars cover different moods: a lobby bar, a casino bar, and The Parlour Bar & Lounge, which anchors the nightlife side of the property. The Parlour's room wraps its cocktail program in a deliberately period feel - think plush seating, dark mirrors and a baby grand piano at the center of it all - with classics like the Mint Julep, Old Fashioned and Stone Sour anchoring the menu. Live entertainment plays there on select nights. Up on the second floor, a full-service hair salon and barber shop handle grooming needs.
El Cortez moves at a different rhythm than the Strip mega-resorts. The casino floor is compact enough that regulars find their preferred machines quickly, and the low-limit tables draw a crowd that's more interested in playing than performing. The Parlour Bar & Lounge tends to come alive in the evenings when live entertainment is scheduled - worth checking before you arrive if you want a quieter drink versus a seat near the music. The Original 47 rooms involve a staircase, so guests with heavy luggage or mobility considerations should opt for a Tower Premium room instead. The Cabana Suites across the street have a noticeably different feel from the main building - more resort-casual, less vintage - so they suit guests who want the El Cortez address without the retro aesthetic.
